Start with a Trial Instructional Flight
- An initial on the ground brief introduces the basics of flying
- From start-up on the tarmac, you take control of the Tecnam P92 Eaglet with a qualified instructor at your side
- Pull back on the control column and lift off the runway
- Learn how it feels to turn and bank the aircraft
Obtain your Student Pilot Certificate
The Student Pilot Certificate is the step on your way to becoming an RA Approved Pilot. To be issued with a Student Pilot Certificate you will need to satisfy the minimum requirements below:
- Meet the minimum age requirements. RA Australia will not issue a Student Pilot Certificate to a person under the age of 14 years. We therefore recommend that students do not commence training until they have reached this age. A student pilot cannot fly as pilot-in-command of an ultralight (i.e. solo) until she/he has reached the age of 15 and until an RA-Aus Student Pilot Certificate is issued. Under a Temporary RA Aus Membership issued by the Bunbury Aero Club, up to three hours dual instruction can be undertaken before applying for a Student Pilot Certificate.
- Sign a declaration that your health is of a standard equivalent to that required for the issue of a motor vehicle licence.
- Any persons under the age of 18 require written consent from their legal guardian.
- You must be competent in speaking, writing and understanding instructions in the English language.
- Be deemed competent at basic handling of controls
- Demonstrate a level of maturity required for flight training
- Understand the full requirements of training, including theory
Gain your Pilot Certificate
- The Bunbury Aero Club sells training manuals, log books, aircraft manuals and more to assist in your training studies
- Your instructor will guide you through all aspects of gaining your Pilot Certificate, following our structured training syllabus which is outlined in the Student Pilot Manual
- You’ll be flying a Tecnam Eaglet two seater aircraft. This aircraft is easy to fly and will teach you sound flying habits & skills that are easily transferred to other aircraft
- The Pilot Certificate is the next step in becoming an RA approved pilot, and is issued after you have trained for and reached a specified competency. To be issue with a pilot certificate, you will need to satisfy the minimum requirements outlined below:
- Hold a valid Student Pilot Certificate
- Sign the health and declaration form as mentioned previously
- Have undergone specific training (as stated in the RA Operations Manual)
- Have completed a minimum of 20 hours flight training, of which 5 must be solo
- Have successfully passed a theory and in-flight examination, thus demonstrating to the Chief Flying Instructor (CFI) that you have reached the competency level required for the issue of an RA Aus Pilot Certificate
With a Pilot Certificate you can fly within 25 nautical miles of your base airport. Until you have acquired 10 hours of flight time as pilot-in-command you can only fly solo.
Advanced Training and Ratings
- After gaining your Pilot Certificate you may have developed a desire to travel further or introduce passengers to the thrills of flying. To undertake either of these activities you will need to complete the passenger carriage and cross country endorsement
- Upon completion of these endorsements you will be able to fly recreational aircraft with passengers anywhere in Australia
- The navigation training for this course is conducted in a Tecnam P92 Eaglet
- The requirements for both of these endorsements, plus additional specific endorsements can be found in the RA Aus Operations Manual.
